Motorbicycles, gas bikes, and biking in Wisconsin

Motorbicycles... gas bikes... whatever you want to call them, chances are you will be seeing more of them on the road in the future.  With the state of the economy and the cost of fuel rising, it just makes sense to use a vehicle that gets 80-100 MPG.

That being said, I was never able to achieve the 80-100 MPG people claim they get on these bikes.  Maybe that's because I spent most of my time running at full speed.  I'd get somewhere around 70 MPG.

Since these pictures were taken, I've moved on to building a "pusher" bicycle trailer with a drive wheel powered by a 4-stroke Briggs 3.5 HP.  More on that in a later post...

  2. I never understood the point of a motorized bike, why not just get a motorcycle if your going to go to this degree?

  3. Ciriis, I have a motorcycle. It is registered, and insured, and I have a motorcycle license.

One thing many people like about motorized bikes is that (at least in Wisconsin) you don't need to have a motorcycle license, or register it, or insure it. Those three things save you some money.

I like them because it's a relatively cheap hobby and it is fun. I put more miles on my motorbicycle last year than my motorcycle.

That's where I got my motors.

  7. If you buy a motor kit, it should cost anywhere from about $130-$200. The kit includes everything you need (motor, chain, sprocket, controls, gas tank, etc.)
